Describing Graphs and Charts

Time 2 hours

Objectives

At the end of the session participants will be able to-

  1.  be familiar with different types of graphs and charts.
  2. extract information from graph and chart.
  3. give a pen picture of the given data.

Section-1: Warm up ( 30 minutes )

TN:

  1. T will make 3/4 groups and let them discuss about different steps of writing graphs and charts.
  2. T will show a graph and its description so that participants can find out different steps of a graph.
  3. After discussion T will elicit and give necessary feedback.

HO-1

The graph below shows the population growth rate of Bangladesh from 2009 to 2014. Now describe the graph in your own words.

The graph is about the population growth rate in Bangladesh from 2009 to 2014.

In general, the graph shows the percentage of this population growth rate in Bangladesh in different years. In the graph, it is noticed that in 2009 the growth rate was the highest among the mentioned years. This year the rate was 2.80 %. But in the next year, the rate drops down to 2.16 % which is a positive indicator. In 2011 the decrease in growth rate continued and it came down to 1.90 %. But we observe that in 2012 the growth rate stopped decreasing. In this year population growth rate jumped to 2.10% which is a negative indicator. But in 2013 we noticed a dramatic decrease in population growth rate. It dropped to 1.50% which is a great success for controlling the population growth rate. In 2014 it again decreased to 1.33 % which is the lowest growth rate among above mentioned years.

So, from the graph we are getting a clear data of population growth rate of Bangladesh from the year 2009 to 2014.

Steps:-

  1. Short and clear introduction.
  2. Key points should be described in a single point.
  3. Comparison of different data should be mentioned clearly.
  4. Try not to make spelling or grammatical mistakes.
  5. For the amounts, without writing from…………to, sometimes we can write “it increased by double.”
  6. In the body paragraph, numbers or percentages should be added to the sentences to get a clear idea about the paragraph.
  7. Body paragraph/paragraphs must be organized logically so that examiner can read it easily.
  8. Should not spend more than 20 minutes to describe the graph.
  9. Try to write around 150 words.
  10. We can follow some well-written model answers to make our description standard.
  11. There should be a conclusion part to sum up the description.

Graph Description-1

Question: The graph below shows the mobile phone users of Bangladesh from 2008 to 2012. Now, describe the graph in your own words.

The graph shows the mobile phone users in Bangladesh from 2008 to 2012.

In 2008 the mobile phone users of Bangladesh were 30%. In 2009 the users were increased by 5%. In that year the mobile phone users were 35%. In 2010 the increase in mobile phone users was huge. The users of mobile phone reached 73% in 2010 which was only 35% in the previous year. In 2011 the mobile phone users were increased slightly than the previous year. With 2% increase in mobile phone users, the total users of mobile phones reached 75% in the year 2011. In 2012 with a 12% increase in users there was a rapid growth of mobile phone users in Bangladesh. The users of mobile phones became 87% with a huge increase in 2012. Among all the years given in the graph, mobile phone users were highest in 2012.

So, from the given graph we can see the increase of mobile phone users in Bangladesh from the year 2008 to 2012.

Pie chart description-2

The pie chart shows the population of the countries of the European Union in 2007 by percentage. Now, describe the pie chart in your own words.

In the pie chart we can see the percentage of the population of the European Union in 2007. The percentage of the population are shown in cyclic order in the chart.

Germany is one of the big and famous countries in Europe. In 2007 Germany had 16.6% of the total population of Europe. Next France, which is also a great country in Europe. France had 12.8% of the total European people. The United Kingdom is commonly known as England or Britain. It is also called Great Britain. The acronym of the United Kingdom is Uk and it had 12.3% of people of the total population of Europe in 2007. The population of Italy was a little bit less than the UK and France. The population of Italy was 11.9% of the total number of European people. Then Spain, also a famous country in Europe especially for football. The population of Spain was less than the previously mentioned countries. The population of Spain was 9.0% in 2007. Among all the mentioned countries in the chart, Poland had the least number of people. And the percentage of the population of Poland was 7.7% in 2007 in line with the total population of Europe. And all other countries in Europe which are not mentioned in the pie chart had a 29.7% population of total Europe.

So, from the pie chart, we can see the percentage of the population of different countries of Europe in 2007.
